4 Signs Of Water Damage In Your Home

There are many different ways that your home can be hit by water damage, but the end result is always the same. Costly repairs and a call to your insurance company. When your home is affected by water damage, it will start to show symptoms that will alert you to the problem. It is important that you know the signs of water damage to your home, so the problem can be fixed quickly and efficiently.

Your home could sustain water damage from the following problems:

  • A burst pipe
  • A leak in your roof
  • Storm damage
  • Flooding
  • Human error (Overflowing bath etc.)

Water Stains

The most obvious sign that you have a leak or a burst pipe somewhere in your home is large water stains on your walls or ceilings. If you have a water stain on your ceiling, it indicates a leak on an upper level. These types of water stains are most common in areas that contain either a bathroom or a kitchen. If you find a water stain, trace it to the source and determine how bad the problem is then contact your insurance company.

Swelling in Your Walls

If you spot swelling in your walls, it could be a sign of a serious problem. Swelling or buckling of your walls means that the wood or dry-wall has absorbed quite a lot of water, especially if you can visibly see the effect. This can be the effect of continuous absorption from a minor leak, or the effect of a storm or flooding.

Damp Smell

Not all water damage symptoms are visual, one of the biggest red flags is a strong smell of mildew and damp. If there is a smell of mould in your home, it means the damage is inside your walls. Many older homes have a slight scent of damp which normally adds to their character, but it should only be a slight smell. If you find a room in your home that has a strong smell, you should have the problem investigated.

Although it may seem strange, you can sometimes hear leaks in your home. One of the easiest ways to find symptoms of a leak is to just stop and listen. On a rainy day, turn off all electronic items and go to the room you believe may have a leak. When you listen to the rain, it should sound like the rain sliding off your roof. Water dripping through your roof will have a different sound to the one you are used to hearing. The quicker you spot water damage, the quicker it can be fixed. At Tangible Building we try to ensure that our customers understand the signs of water damage, and the implications of not getting it fixed.
