Water damage and its effect on plasterboard

Date created: 16/12/2014

Water damage is one of those problems where 90% of the damage can actually be hidden from view, making it easy for Insurers and Loss Adjusters to "paper over the cracks" for the problem to come back a few months later.

Plasterboard, because of what it’s made from, has little resistance to moisture, and behind the plaster screed, could lie a big soggy mess.

Things to look out for:-

Bowed or misshapen panels - This is a sure sign that the plasterboard is full of moisture. Any bowed panels should be replaced.

Signs of mould - Mould spores grow inside the plasterboard. So if you’ve had a slow water leak and the plasterboard is showing any signs of mould, it all needs to be replaced.

Paper delamination - Any signs of the paper coming away from the body of the board (bubbles, or edges lifting), means that the core is wet and needs replacing.

If you have suffered water damage in your home, and are worried about the recommendations of the Insurer or Loss Adjuster regarding what needs replacing and what can simply be painted-over, then please call us and speak to our claims helpdesk.

We will carry-out our own independent survey, and tell you what REALLY needs doing, and will then negotiate ON YOUR BEHALF with the Loss Adjuster and Insurer to get the correct work agreed.

Our in-house team of specialist builders will then carry-out the remedial work to your satisfaction, and invoice the insurance company directly.
