What to do in the event of Storm Damage
Storm damage is very often caused by impact (trees falling into house, tiles falling off) or water (rain coming through gaps in ceiling, drains overflowing and flash flooding), which is covered by your buildings insurance.
If your property was affected by the bad weather, there are a number of steps you should take to assess the damage and have the correct information to hand when making a claim.
Check Your House Exterior
Checking the bricks and mortar of your home is very important as it allows you to spot important features that could now be cracked or broken. This can include missing tiles, broken gutters, or possibly smashed windows. You should also look for areas of your home that have been affected in ways that are not immediately obvious. It is very important to check your house from top to bottom.
Check Inside Your Home
If there is storm damage inside your home, it will be immediately apparent as it usually in the form of water damage. You will notice water stains on the floor, the walls, and your furniture will be damp. We advise that you look around the inside of your home for areas that may have contributed to a leak, including skylights, cracks in your walls, and checking the attic ceiling.
Look for Other Types of Damage
Storm damage is not limited to your house structure. Be wary of possible dangers from neighbouring trees that may have loose branches or become unstable during the storm. Fallen debris, loose tiles and broken glass on the floor can also be a cause of other possible problems.
There is no such thing as too much evidence when it comes to an insurance claim. Especially when it comes to storm damage as it is not a cut and dry case. There are so many different areas of your home that can be damaged in a myriad of ways.
Take pictures of any area of your home that you believe has been damaged. The more images available to your insurance company, the more evidence you have to prove your claim.
Don’t Throw Anything Away
This leads back to evidence for your insurance company. Any damaged contents in your home will need to be assessed against their overall value. Call Your Insurance Company
Once you have worked out the extent of the damage to your home, you will need to call your insurance company. You will be asked to detail exactly the situation you are in, so that they understand your claim early. You will likely need to answer questions regarding how your home came to be damaged, and where the damage is situated. Your insurance company will probably send a loss assessor to look over your home.
Protect Your Home from More Damage
Once the dust has settled, and you have contacted your insurance company, you will need to take measures to prevent further damage to your home. You should take note of the location of all electronic devices that can be easily moved to a secure area. It is also wise to buy some tarpaulin to cover your furniture and any electronics that cannot be easily moved. Try to cover any wall cracks, or broken windows as best as you can but make sure to be careful when doing so.
