Water Damage FAQ's

Suffering a flooded home is disastrous. The potential repair costs seem endless and the water that has invaded your home seeps into every nook and cranny as it causes damage from the inside out. But it’s not just floods that can cause untold damage.  Leaking or burst pipes, poorly fitted appliances, leaking water tanks and showers can all take their toll on your home.

If you think you may have suffered water damage, are worried about the consequences or want to know how to prevent it we’ve got answers to some of your most frequently asked questions.

How can I prevent water damage?

Taking proper care of your home is the number one way to protect it from water damage. By engaging in proper maintenance regime, you can decrease the risk of pipes bursting and allow yourself to notice problems quickly and efficiently. It is also important to know exactly where your water tank and boiler are located, as well as the cut of valve to be used in emergencies.

Why does my house smell sour?

When there is a leak in your home, the humidity will be a lot higher than normal. This will mean your carpets and walls will begin to absorb moisture from the air which makes them the perfect place for fungus and bacteria to form. A sour smell can be attributed to bacteria spreading. After your property has been professionally dried, the smell should go away.

What are some common signs of water damage?

The most obvious effect of water damage is pools of water on the floor in areas with running pipes such as your kitchen or your bathroom. Knock on effects from water damage involve water being absorbed into your walls resulting in wall paper and plaster flaking away. You are likely to also see mould and fungus growing in damp areas, as well carpets or furniture being ruined. For more information on common water damage problems, please visit our advice page here.

How long will it take to dry my property?

The biggest factors in property drying is the scale and location of the damage. Other factors include building materials, local weather conditions and how quickly a professional property drying company is called in. Because of the above factors, there is no set time for how long it takes to dry a property.

What are the steps in water damage restoration?

At Tangible Building, we have a four step process to restoring your home after it has sustained water damage. We start by using trace and access methods to find the leak source. Second we write a comprehensive report outlining the jobs necessary to fix the problem. Third our BDMA qualified technicians operate our property drying process. Lastly, we carry our repairs and restoration of your home. For more information about how Tangible Building works to fix your home after water damage, please visit our water damage page.

Do I need to move out whilst my home is being dried?

The drying process can be quite noisy and drying equipment needs to remain on during the entire process. If you find the noise disruptive, then it is advisable to find new sleeping arrangements.

Will my home insurance cover the damage to my property?

If you are covered, then your insurance will pay. But how much they pay could come down to a few factors relating to how much precaution was taken before the leak started, the source of the damage, and many others.
